Richard Torrez Jr is the Tokyo 2020 super-heavyweight silver medalist who turned pro in 2022 and built a 14-0 record on the back of relentless pressure and a 12 KOs from 14 wins finishing rate. The Tulare southpaw walked into the Pyramids of Giza on May 23 2026 as the heavy favourite in his IBF heavyweight eliminator against Frank Sanchez and walked out 14-1 with a lot to think about.

The Sanchez loss was a stylistic disaster more than a talent issue. Torrez Jr loves to come forward, throw in volume, and overwhelm — the problem is that pure Cuban counter-punchers eat that style alive when the head movement isn't sharp enough. One right uppercut, 55 seconds into round two, and the unbeaten run was finished.

At 26 he's young, he's strong, and he's still got every physical attribute you'd want in a modern heavyweight. The road back to a world title shot is longer now, but the rebuild can be quick if he tightens up the defence and learns to feint before he steps in. The talent is there.
