Shakhram Giyasov
The Uzbek Hawk
Bio
Shakhram Giyasov is the Rio 2016 Olympic silver medalist who turned pro in 2017 and quietly built a 16-0 record before walking into the Pyramids of Giza on May 23 2026 for the vacant WBA welterweight title against Jack Catterall. The Uzbek had been considered one of the best-kept secrets at 147 — heavy hands, pressure boxing, a relentless work rate — and the British public got their first long look at him.
The Catterall loss was a clear, comfortable points defeat. Giyasov tried, he had moments in rounds five and seven, but the southpaw timing of the Chorley man was a level above. All three judges had it for Catterall and there was no real argument from the Uzbek corner.
At 32 with a now 16-1 record, Giyasov is still a top-ten welterweight on talent and will be a problem for anyone in the division outside the very top tier. The Olympic pedigree, the punching power, the engine — they're all real. He just ran into a fighter who was technically a notch above on the night.
