Canelo Skips Cinco de Mayo — September 12 in Riyadh Under His Own Banner

For the first time in years, there will be no Canelo Alvarez fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend. The Mexican superstar has confirmed he will skip his traditional May date and instead return on September 12 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, under the banner of his new promotion, Canelo Promotions. The event is titled "Mexico Against the World." Christian Mbilli — recently elevated to full WBC super middleweight champion — has emerged as the frontrunner. A Crawford rematch appears to be fading.

  • Canelo Alvarez (62-3-2, 39 KOs) will return September 12 in Riyadh — no Cinco de Mayo fight for the first time in years due to elbow surgery recovery
  • Event titled "Mexico Against the World" — first fight under Canelo's own promotional banner, Canelo Promotions
  • Christian Mbilli (28-0, 23 KOs), the new full WBC super middleweight champion, has emerged as the frontrunner after a public appearance with Canelo and Saudi promoter Turki Al-Alshikh
  • Canelo last fought September 13, 2025 — lost a clear decision to Terence Crawford at 168lbs, then underwent surgery on his left elbow

The Canelo calendar has always had a rhythm to it. May and September. Cinco de Mayo and Mexican Independence Day. Two fights a year, like clockwork, in front of sold-out arenas and pay-per-view audiences that dwarf anything else in the sport.

That rhythm is broken in 2026. There will be no May fight. The left elbow that required surgery after the Crawford loss has demanded a longer recovery than Canelo's pride would normally allow. And so the Mexican icon will sit out the spring and target a single fight in September — his first bout under his own promotional company, in Riyadh, on the biggest stage Saudi boxing has to offer.

Why Mbilli Makes Sense

The opponent has not been officially confirmed, but the signs point strongly towards Christian Mbilli. The French-Cameroonian puncher was recently elevated to full WBC super middleweight champion after Canelo was stripped, and he brings exactly the kind of profile that makes for a compelling event in Riyadh.

Mbilli is unbeaten. He is young. He carries 23 knockouts from 28 wins. And he was publicly brought together with Canelo by Saudi promoter Turki Al-Alshikh at The Ring Awards — a move that was widely interpreted as a signal of intent.

For Canelo, a fight with Mbilli offers the chance to reclaim the WBC belt he once held and to do it against a dangerous, legitimate champion rather than a hand-picked opponent. That matters. After the Crawford loss, Canelo needs a meaningful victory to restore his standing at 168 pounds.

The Crawford Rematch Fades

The fight many fans wanted was a Crawford rematch. Terence Crawford outboxed Canelo over 12 rounds in September 2025 in one of the most impressive performances of his career. A rematch — particularly in Riyadh — would have been one of the biggest fights in boxing.

But that fight appears to be moving further away. Crawford has his own plans at welterweight, and the economics of a rematch are complicated by the fact that Canelo lost clearly the first time. The narrative of a rematch does not sell as well when the result felt decisive.

Mbilli is the fresher, more dangerous option. He is the champion Canelo is not, and he represents the next generation at 168 pounds. It is the kind of fight that gives Canelo something to prove — and Canelo at his best has always been at his most dangerous when he has something to prove.

Canelo Promotions

The September 12 card will also mark the launch of Canelo Promotions — Canelo's own promotional venture that gives him greater control over his career and his business. At 35, with the clock ticking on his prime years, Canelo is making the kind of move that the sport's biggest earners eventually all make: taking ownership of the business as well as the fighting.

It is a bold step. Promoting and fighting on the same card brings its own pressures. But Canelo has never lacked confidence, and with Saudi money backing the venture, the resources are there to build something significant.

September 12. Riyadh. Mexico Against the World. Canelo under his own banner. The comeback starts there.
