Ginjiro Shigeoka
Bio
Ginjiro Shigeoka is a former IBF minimumweight world champion from Japan and one of the most decorated 105-pound fighters of his generation. He won the IBF title in 2024 and defended it once before losing his rematch to Pedro Taduran in May 2025 in Tokyo.
After the Taduran rematch he collapsed in his corner and was rushed to hospital with an acute right subdural hematoma. He underwent craniotomy surgery the following day and remained in hospital for 303 days before being discharged in May 2026. His older brother Yudai Shigeoka — a former two-time world champion in his own right — retired from professional boxing to care for him.
Shigeoka will not fight again. He suffers significant paralysis on the left side and has years of rehabilitation ahead of him. But the sport will not forget him — the bravery of the Shigeoka brothers stands as one of the most moving stories boxing has produced this decade.
