Bio

Marlon Tapales is the Filipino former unified WBA and IBF super bantamweight world champion, a fighter whose career has been built on heart, volume and an awkward, slippery style that's given everyone in the division problems on their way through. The Nightmare nickname is genuinely earned.

Tapales captured the WBO bantamweight world title back in 2016 with a stoppage of Pungluang Sor Singyu, then moved up to 122 and rebuilt his way to championship gold a second time. His 2023 unification victory over Murodjon Akhmadaliev in San Antonio remains one of the underrated upsets of the modern era — a hard-graft southpaw-style decision win that earned him the unified belts and the date with Naoya Inoue at the Tokyo Dome in late 2023.

Make no mistake — losing to Inoue is no shame at this weight. Tapales took the Monster ten rounds before being stopped, made him work harder than most expected, and walked out with his reputation enhanced rather than diminished. He remains a major name in the Asian super bantamweight conversation and a viable top-ten 122-pound operator on his day.
