Ramon Cardenas
The Man Who Dropped The Monster
Bio
Right then. Ramon Cardenas is one of the most underrated names in modern super bantamweight boxing — and he is also, fairly or unfairly, defined by the moment in May 2025 when he timed a beautiful counter left hook off a feint and put Naoya Inoue on his backside in round two of an undisputed title fight in Las Vegas. Make no mistake — that knockdown is on the highlight reel of every Inoue opponent for the rest of time.
Cardenas did not get the win. Inoue recovered, switched his guard, walked Cardenas down for six more rounds and finished him in the eighth — vintage Monster recovery. But the fight is the reason Cardenas is now one of the most-quoted voices on Inoue, and the reason his read on the May 2 superfight at the Tokyo Dome carries weight. He has shared a ring with the Monster. He sparred 99 rounds with Junto Nakatani. He is one of two or three people on earth qualified to break this one down properly.
The Texan is a sharp counterpuncher with a brilliant feint game and underrated power. He has rebuilt at 122lbs since the Inoue fight and is angling for another world title shot in 2026. Watch this space.
