Ryan Kelly
The Birmingham Banger
Bio
Ryan Kelly is one of the more remarkable redemption stories in British boxing right now. The Birmingham man started his career as a journeyman, took fights at a week's notice up and down the country, and has slowly transformed himself into a genuine British title contender thanks to a relentless work ethic and a willingness to take the harder route every time.
Stylistically Kelly is a banger — and not in a one-shot-puncher sense, but in a take-your-shot-to-give-it sense. He throws heavy, he comes forward, and his ten knockouts have all been the kind of accumulation stoppages that come from breaking opponents down. He's been outboxed by slicker operators throughout his career, but he's never been outworked.
On May 2 in Wolverhampton, Kelly challenges Bilal Fawaz for the British and Commonwealth super-welterweight titles on the chief support to Walker-Eggington. It's the biggest night of Kelly's career to date and the kind of moment a journeyman-turned-contender doesn't get twice.
