Daniel Blancas is the unbeaten super middleweight from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who has just been handed the biggest night of his career at about forty-eight hours' notice.

When Jesus Ramos Jr was hospitalised on the Thursday of fight week and his interim WBC middleweight defence collapsed, PBC rebuilt the San Diego card around what was left. Blancas, 15-0 with seven knockouts, was promoted into the co-feature against Mexico's Sergio Jimenez at 168 lbs.

He weighed 166.8 lbs for it, and that is the interesting part. A fighter who takes a step up on short notice and still makes weight comfortably is a fighter who was already in the gym doing the work. Plenty would have used the reshuffle as a reason to ask for more time.

Blancas is not a big puncher by super middleweight standards — seven stoppages in fifteen is a boxer's ratio, not a banger's. Against an opponent with fifteen knockouts in eighteen fights, that tells you exactly how this one is supposed to go: Blancas has to be the busier, smarter man and keep it at his range.

Make no mistake, this is a genuine test rather than a soft landing. Unbeaten records get taken on nights like this, and Blancas has walked towards it rather than away.
