Biography

Jaime Munguia is one of the most commercially important Mexican fighters of the post-Canelo generation. A Tijuana-born pressure fighter with heavy hands, Munguia was the WBO light-middleweight champion from 2018 to 2020 and made five successful defences before moving up through 160 and landing at 168.

His 2024 fight with Canelo Alvarez was a genuine twelve-round affair — a unanimous decision loss, yes, but a far more competitive night than the odds suggested. The 2025 campaign was mixed. A points loss to Bruno Surace in what should have been a tune-up was followed by a rematch win later in the year, which itself was clouded by a PED allegation he was eventually cleared of.

In March 2026, Munguia reunited with trainer Eddy Reynoso for a short-notice two-month camp ahead of his WBA 168 title challenge to Armando Resendiz on May 2 at T-Mobile Arena. At 29, with 47 fights on the clock, he has the miles but also the experience. A proper Mexican main-eventer.
