Juan Francisco Estrada
El Gallo
Bio
Juan Francisco Estrada is El Gallo — the Rooster — and what a fighter he's been. At 35 years old with a record of 44 wins and 5 losses, he's one of the finest pound-for-pound talents Mexico has produced. The man was a former WBC and WBA super flyweight champion, and when he was at his best around 115 pounds, he was genuinely one of the best boxers walking the planet, never mind just at his weight class. His skill set was remarkable: sharp, technical, devastating in transitions, and with the kind of ring intelligence that comes from years of elite competition.
The most iconic moment of Estrada's career was his trilogy with Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez — one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters ever. Those three fights were absolute classics, and while the results didn't always go his way, Estrada proved he could operate at the absolute highest level. He gave Chocolatito everything he had. Over the years, Estrada held titles, fought the best, and earned massive respect as a veteran of the sport. His record speaks for itself: 44 professional fights at the elite level, 28 knockouts, and championships in his name.
Now, on April 11th in Tokyo, Estrada moved up to bantamweight to challenge Tenshin Nasukawa in a WBC eliminator. Unfortunately for El Gallo, the move up in weight and his age caught up with him. He was stopped by Nasukawa in the ninth round in a hard-fought battle. Reports suggest Estrada suffered broken ribs during the fight, which explains why he couldn't continue. At 35 years old, questions are now swirling about his future — can he bounce back, or is it time to consider hanging up the gloves?
But here's the thing: Estrada has nothing left to prove. He's given everything to the sport, fought the best, won titles, and was part of some of the greatest fights of the last decade. Whatever he decides, El Gallo will be remembered as a warrior and a champion. He's earned his place in boxing history.
