Tenshin Nasukawa
The Prodigy
Bio
Tenshin Nasukawa is one of boxing's most intriguing talents — a fighter who made his name in kickboxing before transitioning to the squared ring. The lad's only got 8 professional fights, but what he's shown with his hands is electric. His footwork and hand speed are genuinely elite-level; when he's sharp, he's almost impossible to hit clean. That southpaw stance of his creates constant angles that frustrate opponents, and his reflexes are the sort you don't often see at 118 pounds.
Of course, there's the elephant in the room — his exhibition loss to Floyd Mayweather back in 2018. Now, that wasn't a real professional fight, but it tested him against one of the greatest boxers ever to lace gloves, and while he got schooled, the experience gave him perspective. Since then, he's been climbing steadily, winning fights and proving that the transition from kickboxing was genuine, not just a gimmick. His record of 8-1 is deceiving because the level of competition he's facing now is completely different from his early opponents.
Just recently, on April 11th in Tokyo, Nasukawa stopped Juan Francisco Estrada in the ninth round in a WBC bantamweight eliminator — and that's a massive statement. Estrada's a former two-time world champion, a veteran with nearly 50 professional fights, and Nasukawa dismantled him. The stoppage was dominant, with Estrada unable to answer the bell after the ninth. That victory makes Nasukawa the mandatory challenger for the WBC bantamweight title. Some critics say he's not ready for world-class opposition, but stopping a world-class veteran like Estrada answers a lot of questions pretty decisively.
At 27 years old, Nasukawa's got time on his side and he's clearly got the talent. The real question now isn't whether he's ready — it's whether the current titleholder wants any part of him. That hand speed and footwork are going to trouble anyone at 118 pounds. This is a lad worth watching very closely over the next year.
