Salvador Sánchez

Bio

Right then — Salvador ‘Chava’ Sánchez was a Mexican featherweight champion whose career was cut desperately short. He held the WBC featherweight title and, in August 1981 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, he stopped Wilfredo Gómez in round eight in one of the defining fights of the early eighties.

Make no mistake — Sánchez was levels above most of the division. He died in a car accident in 1982, aged 23, which is why a rematch with Gómez never happened. It remains one of the great ‘what if’ stories in boxing.

When Gómez died in October 2026, the name of Sánchez came straight back into the conversation, as it always does. Read our tribute to Gómez for more on that night in Las Vegas.
