Johnny Fisher beat Michael Pirotton last night, and I covered the scorecards separately, but the more interesting story this morning is what happens next. There has been talk for weeks about Dillian Whyte, about Richard Riakporhe, about Fisher parachuting straight into the deep end now that Zuffa Boxing has him signed. Having watched him fade badly from round five onward against a fighter with no name recognition in this country, I think that talk needs to stop, at least for one more fight.
Let's not beat around the bush. A 95-95 card from any judge in a fight Fisher was supposed to be winning clearly tells you the engine is not where it needs to be yet. Whyte is levels above Pirotton in every department that matters, ring IQ, power, championship experience, and putting Fisher in against him off the back of a performance like that is not building a career, it is gambling with one.
What Zuffa Should Actually Do
The smart move, and I would be amazed if some in that camp are not already thinking it privately, is one more rounds fight against someone live enough to test the stamina again but not so dangerous that a bad night turns into a genuine loss. Fisher has been here before, back on track after the Dave Allen defeat with the kind of gradual rebuild that actually worked. Do that again. Get him ten rounds against a durable, awkward operator, fix the fade, and then start the Whyte and Riakporhe conversations from a position of strength rather than hope.
The Bull Army Factor
Fisher has built a genuine following on personality and heart as much as pure boxing ability, and that crowd will forgive a laboured decision here and there. What they will not forgive, and what Zuffa cannot afford, is Fisher's first appearance under the new banner ending in a stoppage loss to a fighter with a bigger reputation. Proper matchmaking protects assets like that. Reckless matchmaking burns them.
The Verdict
I like Fisher, I have said before he has class in there, but class without conditioning does not win world title fights. Give him the rebuild fight, sort out whatever went wrong from round five onward, and then, and only then, put him in with Whyte or Riakporhe. Skip that step and I think we are looking at a very different, very sobering headline the next time Fisher fights a genuine level above Pirotton.
