The Order That Kills The Soft Comeback
Make no mistake — the WBA has just lit a fire under Gervonta Davis. The sanctioning body confirmed Sunday May 24 that Tank's mandatory challenger Floyd Schofield Jr is next, with a 30-day negotiation window now open. The deadline is June 22. Miss it, it goes to purse bid. There is no longer any wriggle room for a soft Floyd Schofield Sr-style stay-busy in San Antonio.
Davis has not fought since the March 2025 draw with Lamont Roach Jr. That is 14 months out and counting. He has been ducking the rematch, he has been ducking the Cruz rematch talk, and now the WBA has finally moved the queue for him. About time.
Schofield Has Been Waiting In The Wings
Floyd Schofield Jr is 18-0 with 13 stoppages and he has been wearing the WBA #1 lightweight slot like a sandwich board for nine months. Twenty-three years old, fast hands, big right cross, and a chin no one has properly tested yet. He is a real fight. Schofield Sr told reporters on Monday that talks were already advanced before the order — "We have been speaking with Tank's people for weeks. The order just makes it official." Class work from the camp.
Why Tank Has Been Stalling
Let's not beat around the bush. Tank Davis has been stalling because Schofield is a worse stylistic puzzle than the public realises. Tall, rangy, athletic, southpaw-versus-orthodox dynamics that Tank does not love — remember he struggled badly with Lamont Roach over the same kind of rangy challenge. Schofield is younger, fresher and more active. That is the worst combination of variables Tank could draw out of the lottery and it is exactly what he just drew.
Prediction Watch
Forced into the fight, I make it Tank Davis by a competitive late stoppage — tenth or eleventh round, body shots wearing the kid down. But it will be uncomfortable. Schofield wins three or four early rounds, the crowd panic, then Tank's pressure finally tells and the youngster gets dragged out at the end. If Tank skips out of negotiations and they bid — class on Schofield's side. He wants this fight. Tank does not. Body language tells you who is going to perform.
Either way, the bell is finally ringing on the inactivity. Brilliant for the lightweight division, brilliant for the WBA, brilliant for boxing. Now make the date.
