Biography

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr is the son of arguably the greatest Mexican fighter of all time and one of the most commercially polarising figures in the sport. Born in Culiacan, Sinaloa in 1986, Junior carries a name that opens any door in Mexico and shuts plenty of others — and he has spent his entire career boxing in its shadow.

The peak years came in 2011 and 2012 when he held the WBC middleweight title and made three successful defences before being dominated over twelve rounds by Sergio Martinez. The decade after that was a chaotic mix of comeback fights, weight issues, missed drug tests, and the occasional reminder that he can still bang. The 2021 trilogy with Anderson Silva, the loss to Andy Lee, the failed bout against Daniel Jacobs that never happened — it has been a winding road.

April 2026 saw a properly committed return at cruiserweight in Reynosa, where he stopped Colombian Jhon Caicedo in three rounds and called out the winner of Benavidez vs Zurdo Ramirez. At 40, with the Chavez surname still moving the needle in Mexico, Junior remains one of the most marketable names at 200lbs even if the levels above him are a different sport entirely.
