Matthew Boreland
The Northern Irish Prospect
Bio
Matthew Boreland is the Northern Irish super bantamweight who took his first professional defeat on the Croke Park prelims on 5 September 2026, counted out from a left hand to the body at 3:03 of the fifth round against Liverpool's Joe McGrail in a WBA Continental Gold title fight. He falls to 7-1 with two knockouts.
Let's not beat around the bush: he won the early rounds on my card. He was sharp, he was busy, and for six minutes it looked like the sort of unbeaten-against-unbeaten fight that goes ten hard rounds. Then McGrail hurt him in the third, the confidence went out of his feet, and the body shot in the fifth ended it. There is no shame in losing to the best body puncher in the division.
Luke's view: Boreland will be back. A first defeat on the biggest stage of your career, in front of a crowd that was not there for you, is a hard way to learn, but he has the tools to rebuild at Celtic and Irish title level and come again. Make no mistake, the early rounds showed a proper fighter.
