Bio

Right then, Lawrence Okolie is proof that a proper re-boot can resurrect a career. The Hackney-born 33-year-old was once one of the most polarising fighters in British boxing — technically competent but dreadful to watch, winning the WBO cruiserweight title with a series of clinch-fests that nearly drove the casual fan away from the division entirely. Then he lost the belt in another soul-destroying fight, moved up to heavyweight, teamed up with Shane McGuigan, and quietly became one of the most intriguing prospects in the top division.

Make no mistake, the Okolie at heavyweight is a proper fighter. The extra weight has liberated his shoulders, the jab now has genuine snap, and the chopping right hand behind it has become a finishing shot. Three straight stoppage wins since moving up — most recently a proper stoppage of Ebenezer Tetteh in December — mean the WBC Silver belt he picked up in 2025 actually means something. The London crowd hasn't fallen back in love with him yet, but the performances are making it hard to argue.

The April 25 trip to Paris to face Tony Yoka is the one he's been asking for since 2016, when Yoka won Olympic super-heavyweight gold and Okolie went out in the quarter-finals. Ten years of needle, a proper grudge, a hometown crowd for Yoka, and the WBC Silver on the line. Win it and he's fighting for a world title before the end of 2026. Lose and the re-boot narrative collapses. This is levels — for both men.
