A Date, A Venue, And A Denial
Right then. Over the weekend a report did the rounds that Ryan Garcia vs Teofimo Lopez had got as far as a date and a venue: February 6, 2027, at Madison Square Garden. It sounded like a fight that was nearly done.
Ryan Garcia shut it down himself. He said it was not true, that there had been no discussions "at least from my side", and that he is not looking to fight in New York, although he would not totally take it off the table. That last bit is classic Garcia. Leave the door open, just in case the money walks through it.
The Catterall Order Changed Everything
Let's not beat around the bush about why this matters. On Tuesday the WBA ordered Lopez to defend his welterweight title against Jack Catterall, with a negotiation window running to October 22 before purse bids. Lopez's camp have been talking to their lawyers ever since. Catterall is the mandatory, and he earned it.
A February 6 Garcia fight only works if Lopez either gets past Catterall in the next few months or gets out of the obligation altogether. Neither of those is simple, and neither is quick. Negotiations, a purse bid, a full camp and recovery time do not fit neatly into a February date with the Garden already booked.
Garcia Has His Own Plan
Garcia is not sitting around waiting. He answered Isaac Cruz's callout straight after Cruz stopped Nestor Bravo in San Diego and said a December offer was on its way. Cruz is a proper action fight, it keeps Garcia busy, and it does not need anyone's permission from a sanctioning body.
What Is Really Going On
If you know, you know. Representatives talk about dates all the time. That does not mean a fighter has signed off on anything, and Ryan Garcia is not a man who lets other people announce his fights for him. The honest reading is that there have been early conversations between the camps, and Garcia is not yet committed to any of them.
That suits Garcia fine. He is the bigger draw of the two, and every week Teofimo Lopez spends fighting with the WBA is another week Garcia keeps the leverage.
The Verdict
Make no mistake, I think Ryan Garcia fights Isaac Cruz in December and it is not close to February 6 for Lopez. I think Garcia beats Cruz inside the distance, somewhere around the middle rounds, because Cruz walks forward behind a high guard and Garcia's left hook is built for exactly that. Garcia vs Lopez still happens in 2027, but my prediction is it lands in the spring or summer, not February, and it only happens once the Catterall mess is finally sorted.
