The Warning
Right then. William Zepeda has looked across the lightweight division at Abdullah Mason and told him, in plain terms, that he would not make it to the final bell.
“With my style of fighting, going in, getting out, maintaining pressure, maintaining distance, and my body punches, it would be a hard-fought battle,” Zepeda said. “I believe I have enough weapons in my arsenal to tire him out. I don’t think he would be able to last all 12 rounds with me.”
Normally that is the sort of line you nod at politely and forget. Not this time.
Because Of What He Did To Roach
Lamont Roach Jr has shared a ring with Gervonta Davis and with Isaac Cruz and heard the final bell both times. He is not a man who folds.
Zepeda beat him 118-110 and 117-111 twice. That is not a points win, that is an eviction. Roach was never once allowed to set his feet, and the scorecards read like a man being moved around his own house by somebody else.
That is the evidence behind the quote. Zepeda is not guessing at his own output, he has just proved it against a fighter with a far better chin than most of this division.
What Mason Has That Nobody Else Did
One punch. That is the difference.
Mason is a southpaw with genuinely frightening speed and a straight left down the middle that arrives before you have finished deciding to move. Zepeda walks in behind his own head. Against everyone else that costs him a couple of clean shots a round. Against Mason it could cost him the night in the first four.
The mirror stance cuts the other way too, mind. It opens a clear lane for Zepeda’s lead right hook into the liver, and once he gets his head onto Mason’s chest the short uppercuts start arriving from angles you cannot see coming.
The Shakur Fight Is The Real Tell
Shakur Stevenson beat Zepeda on the cards in 2025, and everybody who watched it knows what it cost him. Stevenson has the best distance control and lateral movement in the sport and he still spent twelve rounds having his ribs worked over.
If elite footwork does not save you from Zepeda’s body work, standing in front of him and swapping certainly will not. Mason’s instinct when he is crowded is to plant and fire back. Against most men that wins him rounds and highlight reels. Against this one it is an invitation.
And there is the Sam Noakes night to consider. Noakes came forward in straight lines, nothing clever, and still made Mason box off the back foot and take real punishment to get the decision. Zepeda does not come forward in straight lines — he cuts the ring off and closes the exits.
Luke’s Verdict
This is the best fight at lightweight and it is not close. An explosive young champion against the most relentless engine in the sport. Everything about it is appealing.
Which is exactly why it will not happen yet. Top Rank did not build Mason to feed him into this at twenty-two, and there is no version of a Zepeda fight that leaves a young man unmarked, even in victory. Expect a defence or two against opponents who will stand at range and let him look brilliant.
My call: the fight gets made in 2027, not 2026, and Zepeda wins it by stoppage somewhere between rounds nine and eleven. Mason has the shot that ends it early, but he will not get twelve rounds of room to land it.
